“I don’t know where I’m going from here, but I promise it won’t be boring.” -David Bowie
I am an undergraduate student at University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA in the School of International Studies. As a Global Studies major, I am required to study abroad for two semesters in order to complete my graduation requirements, and am traveling to Japan to do so. I hope to not only become proficient in speaking and writing the Japanese language, but to break out of my American “box” and experience an opportunity unlike any I will receive for the rest of my life. I hope to make a positive impact in the lives of the people I interact with abroad as well as those in the United States after I return.
…Or, you know, survive.
I’m using a blogging format to share my thoughts and experiences while I’m abroad to keep my family and friends updated, but also to be able to look back on my reflections during this life-changing experience. Some hobbies of mine include music (listening and playing), creative writing, drawing, playing video games, and researching things that interest me through museums, libraries, and the internet. I consider myself mediocre to competent at many things, but not proficient in one specific field. I like to think of it as “giving myself options,” but I suppose only time will tell if that’s really the case. Perhaps I will have a more definite path in mind for my life by this time next year. Or perhaps not. Maybe life becomes boring if you settle on one thing for too long.
